The highly anticipated 2024 Nigeria Bankers Games took place at the Sports Complex of the University of Lagos on Saturday. The events started with an impressive march past which was won by First Bank , dethroning Access Bank , who won the event last year .

In the football event, the first match of the day between First Bank and FCMB ended in favour of the former, who came from a goal down to win by three goals to one.

In the second match, Sterling Bank defeated Stanbic IBTC by two goals to nil after a goalless first half, while the last game of the football events  between Access Bank and U.B.A ended in stalemate.

The final of the competition will take place on the 30th of November. Meanwhile, stakeholders spoke with the media facilitator on benefits of the games.

Dimeji Ojo of First Bank said, “Last year we won the football segment and we are back stronger this year; we hope to win it again. As people can see, we won our first game against FCMB by 3-1 despite going a goal down.

“Aside the Games, bankers stand to gain a lot from these games because we get to meet ourselves and bond. I have made long-lasting friendships with colleagues from other sectors, and we also get to exercise and have some fun. It is a laudable achievement by the organisers.”

Austin Ihenyen, Team Manager, Team UBA, said, “Over the years, the Bankers Games have come to stay because it has helped create a work-life balance for staff and provides an avenue for us to come together and network. We also get to show our other skills aside from our banking skills.

“What the organisers are trying to achieve over the years goes beyond just the games themselves; rather, they want to bring bankers together and help ease the pressure, as well as to meet other colleagues and network; winning is secondary, and they should be commended for that.”

Samuel Olufowose of Team Access noted, “The Bankers Games is an activity that seeks to promote team bonding, a healthy lifestyle, and employee engagement, as well as team bonding among bankers.

“It cuts across different representatives from separate banking industries, and this shows that despite being competitors in the industry, we can also build friendship and leverage on the relationship that we tend to build at the Bankers Games.”
