The Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM) Nigeria, a foremost Catholic Order, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently reverse economic policies responsible for the intense hardship Nigerians are passing through.
The KSM Nigeria said this in Calabar on Friday at a press briefing to mark the commencement of its 45th Supreme Council Convention with the theme “Deepening Christian Spirituality and Family Values – Roles and Challenges” billed to be held from Friday to Sunday.
Its Leader, Worthy Supreme Knight Sir. Dr Charles Mbelede, said, “The Order is deeply concerned about the current dwindling fortunes of the nation, with its attendant hardship and sufferings of so many Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable.
“The economic index is dismal and the leaders of the nation must up their games to reverse the trend. A thorough review of the current economic policies is expedient to stave off the hopelessness of most Nigerians.
“We endorse wholeheartedly the Catholic Bishops Conference position on this matter, especially its strident call for humanness in governance.”
The Knights of St. Mulumba Leader also called for significant reforms in the nation’s Correctional Centers which he described as “old, cranky and over-crowded with inmates who are poorly looked after.”
“The grim statistics of the total inmates in our Correctional Centres this year alone is 84, 000, out of which only 27, 000 inmates have been convicted. The rest are awaiting trials. The figure indicates that 34, 767 inmates exceed the total capacity of our Correctional Centres put at 50, 000.The welfare of inmates must be prioritised,” he said.
