In a bid to curb Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), the Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI) has convened a seminar engaging 50 men and boys from Kujama and Kasuwan Magani in Kajuru local government area of Kaduna state.
The event, supported by the United Nations Trust Fund, was held at City Comprehensive Academy, Kujama, and focused on fostering inclusive strategies to tackle gender-based violence.
The Permanent Commissioner of the Kaduna Peace Commission, Barrister Rebecca Sako-John, highlighted the alarming prevalence of violence, noting that one in three women globally “experiences violence in their lifetime.”
She urged collective efforts to involve men and boys in addressing the issue, particularly in crisis-affected areas like Kajuru.
Programme Manager and VAWG expert for EWEI, Mrs. Juliana Joseph, emphasized the importance of male allies in the fight against gender-based violence.
She noted that men and boys often unknowingly perpetuated harmful behaviours and stressed the need for awareness to enhance women’s contributions to society.
Participants, such as Mr. Lazarus Haruna from Kasuwan Magani, expressed newfound commitment to promoting gender inclusivity, emphasizing the importance of education and equal opportunities for women and girls.
EWEI’s ongoing project, Together We Can, launched in November 2023 and running until October 2026, aims to support survivors of violence in Kaduna state and reinforces community-led solutions to end VAWG.
