ABUJA – In a determined effort to curb the ongoing vandalism of public infrastructure, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has arrested over sixteen individuals linked to the destruction of street lights and other government property.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown initiated by AMMC to protect public assets.
Chief Felix Obuah, the AMMC Coordinator, confirmed the arrests at a media briefing, revealing that five suspects were apprehended on Thursday alone, though two others managed to evade capture.
During a parade of the suspects, Obuah emphasized the need for collective action in safeguarding public infrastructure. “Security is everyone’s responsibility,” he stated, commending the support from local vigilantes and hunters, which proved instrumental in the recent arrests.
The AMMC’s intensified operations come amid escalating concerns about the damage to newly installed solar-powered street lights, aimed at enhancing public safety.
Aderemi Rashid, the contractor responsible for these installations, reported that despite anti-theft measures, equipment had been stolen.
Rashid noted that the tools and methods employed suggested a level of sophistication, hinting at organized involvement rather than opportunistic theft.
In a related incident, AMMC disclosed that an expatriate contractor was recently caught dismantling streetlight components and has since been handed over to the police.
According to Obuah, the contractor was allegedly damaging the infrastructure to secure future repair contracts.
The AMMC has reiterated its commitment to pursuing those responsible and called on residents to report any suspicious activities around public property.
Obuah warned that both vandals and anyone purchasing stolen government property would face legal consequences.
