Ikeja Unique Lions Club has taken a breast awareness campaign to market women at Binukunu International Market in Ogudu in Ojota of Lagos State in the bid to reduce the incidence of breast cancer among women in the area.
There were activities like a lecture on breast cancer and how to prevent it and a breast cancer awareness walk and distribution of leaflets on breast cancer awareness and prevention.
The theme of the awareness campaign was breast cancer “Nobody fights alone”.
Speaking at the event, the president of Ikeja Unique Lions Club, Lion Rosetta Emele, said that the Ojota axis was chosen after a needs assessment that the club conducted showed that women in the area did not know about breast cancer and had not been to health facilities for screening.
She added the club took the awareness campaign to the market because it knew that it would be able to reach a large number of women.
She explained that the club was determined to ensure that traders in the market know about breast cancer and take action to prevent the disease.
Lion Emele advised the women to listen to the doctor and do whatever he tells them.
The guest speaker at the event was Dr. Adeyinka Famewo, who spoke on how to prevent breast cancer and how to take care of their body. He urged the women to do self-examination on a regular basis and check for lumps and changes in their breasts.
The medical practitioner told the market women to go to the hospital and report any lumps and changes they observe. He stated that breast cancer is a curable disease and not a death sentence if reported and treated on time.
Dr Famewo tasked the market women to eat healthy food and adopt healthy lifestyles. He told the women that consumption of alcohol is not good for the body and asked them to avoid the substance.
In her comment, Lion Welmer Gayya, the membership chairperson for Ikeja Unique Lions Club, who represented the service chairperson, said that cancer awareness campaign is one of the causes that the Lions Club International is interested in and stressed the need for early detection, adding that early detection leads to treatment and cure.
She stated that breast cancer also occurs in men, advising that men should also go screening.
Also speaking at the event, Chief Akintola Kamorudeen Bologun, the baba oloja of Binukunu International Market in Ogudu in Ojota, thanked Ikeja Unique Lions for bringing the awareness campaign to his market.
Chief Balogun, who is also the Balogun of Ojota, told the market women to tell what they learned from the event to other women.
