Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abia State has tasked the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to ensure that the expectations of the people of the state towards a credible local government election on Saturday is not dashed, even as it asked all political parties in the state to ensure a free violent exercise during the poll.
Briefing newsmen in Umuahia, IPAC chairman in Abia State, Hon Uluocha Chimex said politicians should desist from the notion of seeing every election as an opportunity to unleash mayhem and win at all cost, pointing out that Abia LG election should be devoid of such ugly practice.
Uluocha who is also the state chairman of Young Progress Party (YPP) described the Peace Accord signed on Thursday by the some political parties in the state with the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission in the presence of the service chiefs operating in the state as a sign that parties have agreed to let peace and orderliness reign supreme before, during and after the poll.
“We, members of IPAC, don’t want to see any form violence during the poll. Abia needs peace and all political parties under the umbrella of IPAC should ensure that the election is violent free because the electoral commission has assured us of a level playing ground”, he opined.
Meanwhile, IPAC in the Abia State has described the actions of Representative Alex Ikwecheghi representing Aba North/Aba South constituency at the House Representatives as shameful.
Briefing newsmen in Umuahia, Uluocha maintained that Ikwecheghi’s public display of bravado, arrogance and show of power to a Bolt driver in Abuja was unbecoming of a public officer particularly a representative of the people. “We the political from the state where Representative Ikwecheghi is representing one of our constituencies condemn the act in its entirety”, he asserted.
Meanwhile, the chairman of ABSIEC, Professor George Chima has reiterated the determination of the commission to ensure a free, fair and credible poll in Saturday, November 2, 2024 LG poll.
Speaking at a Stakeholders meeting in Umuahia at attended by some political parties and some service chiefs in Abia, Chima requested parties contesting the elections to play by the rules, adding that they should ensure that their members obey the rules and the electoral guidelines during and before the election.
The highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Peace Accord by some of the parties that attended the Stakeholders meeting.
