Zamfara PDP lawmaker defects to APC, cites party’s ‘unresolved crises’

Sulaiman Abubakar, a member of the House of Representatives, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced Abubakar’s defection on Wednesday, citing a letter from the legislator.

“I can no longer continue to associate with a party that is plagued by internal and external crises,” Abubakar stated in his letter. “The PDP has failed to resolve its leadership issues in my constituency, leaving me with no choice but to seek a new political platform.”

Abubakar, representing Gummi/Bukkuyum federal constituency of Zamfara state, highlighted the party’s leadership crisis in his constituency. “One chairman was unconstitutionally removed while the other decamped with me,” his letter reads.

“Hence, the party lacks structure in my constituency, making it impossible for me to provide good representation and prompt delivery of dividends of democracy to my constituency.”

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda protested the defection, citing Section 68 of the Constitution. “This defection is unconstitutional and unacceptable,” Chinda argued. “The Speaker should not have accepted this letter.”

However, Speaker Abbas dismissed Chinda’s point of order, paving the way for Abubakar’s formal transition to the APC.

Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, a PDP member, has yet to comment on Abubakar’s defection.

Abubakar’s move may signal further realignments within the Nigerian political sphere. “I am committed to serving my constituents effectively, and I believe the APC offers the best platform to achieve this goal,” Abubakar said.
