November 20, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed its intention to appeal against the seven-game suspension imposed on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur following controversial comments about teammate Son Heung-min.

The England Football Association issued the punishment on Monday, ruling out the 27-year-old Uruguayan player from six English Premier League matches and a League Cup quarter-finals against Manchester United.

The disciplinary action stems from a television interview Bentancur gave in June, where he made remarks about Son’s race that were deemed an aggravated breach of misconduct regulations.

In an official statement, Tottenham acknowledged the guilty finding but challenged the severity of the sanction, expressing their belief that the suspension is disproportionate.

During the original interview, Bentancur was asked to display a teammate’s shirt and responded: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

The comments prompted an immediate response, with Bentancur subsequently apologising on Instagram. Son Heung-min accepted the apology, stating that they remain “brothers” and that nothing has changed between them.

The independent regulatory commission imposed a £100,000 fine alongside the suspension, noting that Bentancur should have reasonably anticipated the widespread distribution of his remarks.

The panel considered mitigating factors, including his sincere apology and clean disciplinary record, when determining the punishment.

Bentancur will remain suspended from domestic competitions while the appeal process is ongoing. Tottenham have committed to making no further public statements during this period.
