LAGOS – The Rotary Club of Ota on Saturday 23, November, celebrated the Rotary International Foundation Month in a colourful ceremony held at the Maridom Hotel, Ota, where they pledged commitment to the Global Foundation, while encouraging each member to remain committed to making contributions which is a basic requirement for being a successful member.
In her opening remarks, Rtn. Funke Salau, the Foundation Chair and a Past President of the Club, said the month of Rotary November is the Rotary International Foundation Month and this year’s celebration is particularly important to her, because it is the month she joined the club 10 years ago and became the Opportunity President in the year 2020-2021, emerging the best club in the District 9110 out of about 133 clubs within Ogun and Lagos States.
Speaking further, Rtn. Funke said, “Rotary International is the heart beat of Rotary International which is a non profit organization that supports effort of Rotary to achieve humanitarian service.
“Rotary club of Ota had contributed over $132 thousand dollars since inception to the foundation and produced 119 Paul Harris Fellows, 3 major donors and 4 Benefactors. The Club is one of the clubs that has made one of the highest contributions to Rotary Foundation annually.
“The Rotary Foundation focuses on six areas of service;
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development.” She said.
Rtn. Jackie Kassim, the Irresistible president of the Club, asserted her believe that the Rotary Club of Ota will continue to support Rotary Foundation annually.
In his lecture, PDG. Bola Oyebade, Past District Governor, said, “the Rotary International Foundation is the arm of Rotary International that receives contributions from members of Rotary Clubs from all over the World. Each member is expected to make a yearly contribution of at least $100 through their Clubs to the Foundation.
“The funds are pooled by the Foundation, from where they are dispensed across the World for the execution of humanitarian projects, Clubs are expected to apply specifying projects within the Rotary Six areas of humanitarian Service to get funding for the Projects within their jurisdiction with the funds be made available after every necessary approval has been obtained.
He said, “Rotary has being adjudged the best humanitarian organisation in the World, utilizing over 89% of all its contributions in the direct execution of humanitarian projects and programmes, bringing solutions to human challenges and needs, especially in eradicating polio and promoting peace, poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition, having sustainable solutions that leaves a lasting impact.
“Foundation grants are provided to empower Rotarians to approach challenges and the more we have such contributions the more that can be done.” He told fellow Rotarians.
The Rotarians were also captivated with the lecture delivered by Dr Nelson Ayodele (DNA) on Successful Parenting, emphasizing on the role of parents in shaping and moulding positive minded children, saying, “parents have to be intentional to be successful in child raising. To raise positive minded children is possible, but not easy. It is started with being willing to change the negative habits of a child to positive ones or what I will call the winning attitudes.
‘This is what I call bringing out the winner in your child by imparting in them the winning habits proactively.
Ayodele advised further that parents should not just set academic goals for their children but goals that will engender positive attitudes, noting that the quality of a raw material will eventually determine the quality of a product and went ahead to fully describe the four categories of parents, highlighting the merits and demerits of each.
