No fewer than 1000 people have benefitted from the free health screening organized by the Rotary Club of Arepo Longbridge for members of the Journalist Estate phase one and it’s environ.
Members of the communities came out in their large numbers to partake in the free health screening which was organized to celebrate the Rotary Family Health Day.
Rotarian Dr. Olufunke Ayeni, the magic President of the Rotary Club of Arepo Longbridge, District 9112 Nigeria in an interview with Daily Independent at the journalist estate phase one field where the exercise was carried out said that the programme is an annual event organized with support from Rotary International and some other partners.
Some of the screening that was carried out according to her include; Malaria screening and treatment, HIV counselling and testing, diabetes screening, breast and cervical Cancer screening, eye test and provision of glasses, dental care, prostate cancer screening, distribution of insecticide treated mosquito nets and deworming among others.
She said that the Club collaborated with the Lagos State government which provided a mobile dental van for scaling and polishing and dental care for members of the community.
Ayeni said that the club is carrying out the exercise to ensure that diseases are been prevented.
“This project is a contribution towards disease prevention. When we screen and people detect any disease early it would be easy to treat and cure.”
She said that drugs were also provided for as many that needed it.
Ayeni however advised Nigerians on the important carrying out medical screening regularly.
“If you carry our regular health checks, it helps you to detect any diseases and the earlier you detect, the better because it would go a long way to ensure the success of treatment. For instance when cervical cancer is detected early it can be prevented.”
She added that the Club collaborated with the Journalist Estate Phase one to carry out the exercise.
Also, Rotarian Tayo Egunjobi, the Charter President of Rotary Club of Arepo Longbridge, pointed out that the Rotary Family Health Day is a programme that was initiated by an action group within the Rotary itself and it is in collaboration with Bill and Belinda gate foundation to provide medical services for people within the community.
He said that the programme was organized for the people and the less privilege to access and know their health status before it is too late.
Egunjobi noted that due to the economy situation of the country, the purchasing power of many people in many communities has been eroded and might not have the means of doing regular body checks, hence the reason for the exercise.
He said that this is the fifth time the programme will be carried out in the community and that it will be a yearly event.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with Daily Independent appreciated the Club for the gesture.
