Police Arrest Former Vigilante Operative Absconding With Gun

AWKA – Police Operatives attached to 33 Police Divisional Headquarters near Onit­sha, led by CSP Emeka Obi have arrested a run-away Vigilante, Enediong Bassey, aged 25, as he was running away with pump Action gun with which he used to work as security opera­tive.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Iken­ga Tochukwu, a Superintendent of Police, at about 6.38 p. m. on No­vember 22, acting on credible in­formation Police arrested Bassey, a native of Ikono LGA of Akwa Ibom State, and recovered the Pump action gun wrapped in a bag of rice at Nkwelle – Ezunaka.

Upon interrogation, the sus­pect confessed to being a mem­ber of a security outfit/vigilante and was about to escape with the gun to join his criminal gang, for armed robbery and other unpa­triotic activities.

According to Ikenga, it is because of this and other com­plaints and unprofessional con­duct by some security outfits and vigilante members, the Commis­sioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, in line with the principles of Community Policing reiterates profiling of security operatives assisting the Police and other security agencies on anti-crime operations to improve safety in the state.

Itam has already directed the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti-robbery Squad of the command for comprehensive in­vestigations.

The CP also reiterated the call for profiling of vigilante mem­bers in line with the objective of Community Policing Principles in the state.
