AWKA – Police Operatives attached to 33 Police Divisional Headquarters near Onitsha, led by CSP Emeka Obi have arrested a run-away Vigilante, Enediong Bassey, aged 25, as he was running away with pump Action gun with which he used to work as security operative.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, a Superintendent of Police, at about 6.38 p. m. on November 22, acting on credible information Police arrested Bassey, a native of Ikono LGA of Akwa Ibom State, and recovered the Pump action gun wrapped in a bag of rice at Nkwelle – Ezunaka.
Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of a security outfit/vigilante and was about to escape with the gun to join his criminal gang, for armed robbery and other unpatriotic activities.
According to Ikenga, it is because of this and other complaints and unprofessional conduct by some security outfits and vigilante members, the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, in line with the principles of Community Policing reiterates profiling of security operatives assisting the Police and other security agencies on anti-crime operations to improve safety in the state.
Itam has already directed the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti-robbery Squad of the command for comprehensive investigations.
The CP also reiterated the call for profiling of vigilante members in line with the objective of Community Policing Principles in the state.
