Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed confidence that the people of the South-West will not vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. According to Makinde, the region has learned from the hardships caused by the ruling party.
Speaking as the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West, Makinde said the Yoruba people, who predominantly reside in the states that make up the region, regret their decision to support President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2023 elections. He pointed out that the difficulties faced by Nigerians under the APC-led administration have made them reconsider their political choices.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, had expressed confidence in the party’s ability to retain control of the South-West in the 2027 elections during a meeting aimed at reconciling aggrieved party leaders. Ganduje predicted that the region would continue to back Tinubu in future elections.
Similarly, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, while campaigning in Ese-Odo Local Government Area, declared that the opposition PDP had lost relevance in the state. He claimed that many former PDP leaders had already rejoined the APC.
Responding to these claims, Makinde dismissed the confidence of APC leaders, stating that the PDP still holds strong influence in the South-West. He predicted that the APC would be surprised by the level of support for the PDP in the region.
“If wishes were horses, everyone would be riding them,” Makinde remarked. “I can assure you that the people of the South-West, especially in Ondo State, have become wiser. On November 16, they will show that Ondo State and the entire South-West belong to the PDP.”
Makinde also emphasized that actions speak louder than words, saying, “Talk is cheap. You can say whatever you want, but the people of Ondo State will speak clearly on November 16, 2024, and the whole country will hear them.”
