Liam Payne, former member of the boy band One Direction, reportedly had various drugs, including crack cocaine and methamphetamine, in his system when he tragically fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This information was shared by anonymous Argentinian sources familiar with initial toxicology findings.
The 31-year-old British singer died last week after falling from a third-floor room at a hotel in the Argentinian capital.
According to reports from outlets like ABC News and TMZ, the toxicology results indicated that Payne had consumed a mix of drugs, including “pink cocaine” – a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine, and MDMA – along with crack cocaine and benzodiazepines. Both outlets cited unnamed sources linked to the preliminary findings.
Additionally, the Associated Press reported that an anonymous official confirmed the early results showed signs of cocaine exposure.
However, the official emphasised that the preliminary report does not determine the exact level of drugs in Payne’s system at the time of his death.
The final toxicology report is not expected to be released for several weeks.
Meanwhile, Payne’s autopsy concluded that his fatal injuries were consistent with a fall from the hotel’s third floor.
Argentine authorities are investigating the case, as is common in sudden or unexpected deaths. Prosecutors have ruled out the involvement of any other person.
Inside Payne’s hotel room, investigators discovered evidence of narcotics and alcohol amidst broken furniture and objects, suggesting that he may have experienced a drug-induced episode leading up to his fall.
Photos published by local media revealed substances resembling powder on a table and a broken television screen. Police also found clonazepam, a prescription depressant, alongside over-the-counter medications.
Shortly before Payne’s death, hotel management had contacted emergency services to report a guest displaying aggressive behaviour while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Investigators are working to identify who supplied the substances Payne allegedly consumed while staying at the CasaSur hotel in Palermo, a trendy district in Buenos Aires.
Police have interviewed hotel staff and two women who reportedly visited Payne’s room just hours before the incident.
Fans and figures from the music industry have shared heartfelt tributes in the wake of Payne’s death.
His father, Geoff Payne, remains in Buenos Aires, coordinating with authorities to arrange for the repatriation of his son’s remains.
It is anticipated that Liam Payne’s body will be released next week, allowing for his return to the UK, where fans have already begun gathering for vigils in his honour.
