KANO – A Kano High Court, presided over by Justice Sunusi Ado Maaji, has authorized the State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSAIC) to proceed with tomorrow’s Local Government Elections.
The ruling, delivered on Friday reaffirms KANSIEC’s constitutional mandate to conduct the polls.
Justice Maaji ruled that his judgment supersedes that of the Federal High Court, citing concurrent jurisdiction and the state’s authority over local matters.
He emphasized that his judgment is in accordance with the laws of the land and that the matter at hand is a state issue, which gives him full jurisdiction.
In the wake of this ruling, political stakeholders and residents have been advised to respect the court’s decision and allow the electoral process to unfold without hindrance. The elections promise to shape the future of local governance in Kano, and the court’s verdict has paved the way for a smooth transition.

Legal Counsel and Commissioner for Legal Voters Matters, hailed the judgment as a landmark victory, affirming the commission’s powers.
He said “This judgment is a significant milestone, reaffirming our constitutional role in conducting local government elections”.
The court also directed security agencies to provide full protection and coverage during the elections, warning parties and individuals against disrupting the process. This directive ensures a secure environment for voters to exercise their franchise.
