Former NEC Chairman, Nwosu, Dies At 83

Former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, has re­portedly passed away at the age of 83.

NEC is now known as the Independent National Elec­toral Commission (INEC).

According to a source, Nwosu died in a hospital in Virginia, United States.

An official statement re­garding his death is expect­ed to be released soon.

He was born on October 2, 1941. He was appointed NEC chairman by then Military President, Gen­eral Ibrahim Babangida, serving from 1989 to 1993.

He conducted Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993 elec­tion which was widely adjudged as the freest and fairest in the country’s his­tory.

The election which saw Chief Moshood Abiola as the presumed winner was later annulled by the then Babangida regime.

Chief Abiola of the defunct Social Democrat­ic Party (SDP) defeated Bashir Tofa of the defunct National Republican Con­vention (NRC).

In July 2024, the House of Representatives called on President Bola Tinubu to immortalise Nwosu.

The lawmakers want­ed him immortalised for conducting the election adjudged as the freest and most credible in post-inde­pendence Nigeria.
