Rights Group To FG: Release Kanu To Stop Sit-At-Home

NNEWI – Foundation for Environmen­tal Rights, Advocacy and De­velopment (FENRAD) has said that it is deeply worried over the continued disruption of economic activities in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

The rights group on Mon­day noted that the sit-at-home order initiated by the Indige­nous People of Biafra (IPOB) in 2021 following the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnam­di Kanu, has led to severe economic disruptions, huge losses of financial and human resources in the South-East Zone, as well as created fear and hardship in the zone as businesses, human and traf­fic movements continued to be disrupted on Mondays in the zone due to the sit-at-home order.

In a statement, titled: “The economic effect of the sit-at-home order and the need to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” signed by the Executive Di­rector of FENRAD, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor and made available to newsmen in Nne­wi, yesterday, the rights group noted that the South-East, a vi­brant economic progressive zone, has been allegedly a shadow of itself in terms of businesses and other econom­ic activities.

FENRAD urged the Federal Government to release Nnam­di Kanu, saying that the contin­ued detention of the IPOB lead­er was leading to prolonged of the ugly sit-at-home and dwin­dling economic situation in the South-East and Nigeria with its attendant hardship.

“This situation, initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has spiraled into a severe economic crisis for millions of citizens across the region.”
