Worried by the ongoing food crisis and hyperinflation in Nigeria, the Paramount Ruler of Isiama Autonomous Community in Isiala Mbano Council Area of Imo State and Vice Chairman of the Association of Christian Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Eze (Dr.) Oliver Ohanwe, has called for the immediate and mandatory reinstatement of Agricultural Science in primary and secondary schools across the country.
The monarch argued that the neglect of agriculture—once the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and a primary occupation in the Igbo community—has been worsened by the lack of agricultural education in both public and private schools. He maintained that reintroducing Agricultural Science as a compulsory subject would not only spark youth interest in farming but also help curb the rising food scarcity and inflation.
Speaking to journalists after the 2024 edition of his annual “New Yam Festival” at his “Wisdom Palace Umuihim Isiama,” Eze Ohanwe, who also serves as Chairman of the Okigwe Zone Global Elders Forum and Vice Chairman of the South Eastern Rulers Forum, expressed concerns over the persistent infiltration of herdsmen into fertile farmlands. He noted that this has posed significant threats to farmers and urged the Federal Government to take action to enhance food production.
The Obi Gburugburu of Igboland emphasised that the annual New Yam Festival plays a crucial role in reinforcing the Igbo people’s commitment to farming and includes prayers for prosperity, peace, harmony, and increased fertility.
Addressing the death of former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Eze Ohanwe lauded him as a man of great qualities who positively impacted many lives. He also commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for his significant efforts in giving the late leader a befitting burial. He noted that the governor’s speech at the event, marked by emotion and courage, symbolised a progressive step for the Igbo people.
“I encourage Ohanaeze Ndigbo not to lose hope because Chief Iwuanyanwu left legacies and a foundation that will stand the test of time. He was a great Igbo leader who touched every aspect of life, and I am glad that the Governor has renamed the International Conference Centre after Chief E. C. Iwuanyanwu,” he said.
