EFCC Returns €5,100 Recovered From Nigerian Romance Fraudster To Spanish Victim

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede has handed over €5,100 to the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Juan Ignacio Sell, on Friday.

The amount, which was recovered from a Nigerian romance scammer, was restitution for a Spanish national, Heinz Burchard Einhaus Uchtmann, who fell victim to the fraud.

The recovery was the result of collaborative efforts between the EFCC and Spanish Police, and the handover event further emphasized the strong ties and cooperation between Nigeria and Spain in combating cross-border crimes.

While presenting the deed of release, Olukoyede expressed gratitude for Spain’s longstanding support to Nigeria.

He stated that the recovery of assets and the handover of proceeds of crime demonstrated the fruitful collaboration between the two nations, especially in tackling financial frauds like romance scams, which have become prevalent globally due to the borderless nature of internet crime.

Olukoyede emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to ensuring Nigeria remains a hostile environment for financial criminals.

He also called for more international cooperation to protect the global financial ecosystem from fraudsters whose illegal financial gains surpass those of many legitimate industries.

Ambassador Sell, in his remarks, praised the collaboration between the EFCC and Spanish authorities, noting that it was essential to continue strengthening bilateral efforts in combating financial crime.

The event solidified the EFCC’s determination to curb financial crimes, particularly scams targeting foreign nationals, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to work with international partners in securing justice for victims.
