DSS Releases 6 Detained #EndBadGovernance Protesters

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released six people arrested for their roles in the August 1-10 #EndBadGovernance protests.

It was learnt yesterday that Director-General of the secret police, Adeola Ajayi, ordered their release on September 19 after being cleared of any wrongdoing and released immediately.

Sources said while six the suspects detained in Kaduna were freed upon the conclusion of investigations, three others are facing prosecution after the agency established prima facie cases against them.

A source said: “As a matter of fact, the new DSS Director-General recognises the right of citizens to peaceful protests, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“Notwithstanding, the spy master would not compromise the sacred mandate of the Service in the area of diligently and thoroughly investigating and bringing to justice those who exploit such rights for subversive ends.”

The nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance were hijacked by hoodlums in some locations, leading to loss of lives, looting and destruction of private and public property.
