Cleric Calls For Equitable Governance Amid Economic Hardship

IBADAN – The Founder of the Muslims in Light Organisation, SUFI Nigeria, Dr Rasheed Akinbile, has called for greater equity in governance as Nigerians endure economic challenges.

Speaking at a pre-press conference ahead of the 35th anniversary of the organization’s annual celebration, Almurshid 2024, Dr. Akinbile urged government leaders to align their actions with divine principles of fairness and justice.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by the current economic transition and encouraged Nigerians to remain resilient while the government works to “restructure our economy and lay the foundation of prosperity for our great country.

“As we begin the 35th anniversary of AFINIMONA – ALMURSHID 2024, I want to commend the general population for their demonstration of patience and perseverance in the face of economic hardship.

“Leaders must continue to see power as God-given, and at all levels, elected officials must remember to act for and on behalf of God by distributing the God-given resources of the nation equitably for the benefit of the masses and to ease the suffering of the vulnerable in our society,” Akinbile stated.

This year’s anniversary theme, “Possessors of Power and Vision,” highlights the role of leadership in societal well-being. Akinbile emphasised the responsibility of leaders at all levels to view their power as a divine trust.

Citing Chapter 3, Verse 26 of the Qur’an, Akinbile explained that Islam emphasises just governance, where leaders work for the common good.

He added that Allah’s vision for His people, as expressed in Chapter 31, Verse 20, is one of abundance and bounty, which he believes Nigeria is capable of achieving through equitable leadership and resource management.

Akinbile further highlighted the resilience of Nigerians, particularly the youth, as they strive to create better lives for themselves despite economic adversity.

“The never-die spirit of Nigerians is worthy of celebration, as our youth are working hard to bring into their personal experience the lofty vision of prosperity that Allah has set out for all and sundry in the holy Qur’an,” he said.

The Muslims in Light Organisation has designated November 1–11 for the Almurshid 2024 celebrations, intending to recognise “the inherent power of God in every one of us” and inspire Nigerians to tap into their potential to help improve the country’s economy.

Akinbile concluded with a message of unity and hope, calling on all Nigerians to come together “under the canopy of the divine Light of Allah to celebrate the Nigerian spirit of tenacity, perseverance, and hopefulness.”
