DAMATURU – The Yobe state government has received a significant boost in its healthcare delivery, courtesy of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The organization’s Nigeria Country Representative, Cristian Mundate, handed over an oxygen plant to the state government, aimed at saving lives, particularly those of babies and patients facing health complications.
Located at the Specialist Hospital Damaturu, the oxygen gas plant has a capacity of supplying 720,000 litres of oxygen per day. This initiative is expected to guarantee the rights of children to healthcare, as emphasized by Mundate. The non-availability of oxygen in health facilities has resulted in the deaths of many babies, especially those with complications at birth.
The oxygen plant is not only beneficial for children but also for adolescents and women. It is fully functional and expected to meet the needs of the people in Yobe State and neighboring states. Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana, commended UNICEF for this giant stride, noting that it will complement the state government’s efforts in universal healthcare coverage.
The state government has pledged to ensure routine maintenance and safety of the oxygen plant, recognizing its importance in reducing morbidities and mortalities, especially among children.
