SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria has called for urgent collective action to protect children from dire situations and promote sustainable development for a brighter future.
The organization emphasized that addressing Nigeria’s challenges, particularly those affecting children, demands a united approach with strong and effective partnerships.
The appeal was made by the Fund Development Manager, Thelma Ojelabi, in a statement by the Head of Brand and Communication, Rhoda Daniel Ocheche, on Thursday.
Ojelabi highlighted that “it is our shared responsibility to mitigate the risks that push children into vulnerable conditions and work towards sustainable development for their future.”
She noted that the organization remains committed to providing family-like care, empowering caregivers, and ensuring access to quality education and holistic support for vulnerable children.
The organization pointed out that Nigeria is home to 11.6% of the world’s orphaned children, with 17.5 million Nigerian children living in vulnerable conditions.
As World Development Information Day is marked on October 24, the group stressed the need for increased awareness of development challenges and the pursuit of sustainable progress.
SOS Children’s Villages also underscored the urgency of addressing the needs of Nigeria’s most vulnerable children, who suffer various forms of abuse due to their challenging living conditions.
It cited the recent floods in Borno State as a reminder that any child could suddenly find themselves in difficult circumstances.
To promote meaningful collaborations and achieve sustainable results for the most vulnerable children, SOS Children’s Villages announced the launch of its “SOS FRIENDS” campaign.
The initiative invites individuals, corporate organizations, and the government to contribute through donations, volunteering, and advocacy, ensuring no child is left behind.
SOS added that this partnership will help create lasting change by empowering communities to raise children in nurturing environments that promote their overall growth and well-being.
“We urge everyone to join us as SOS Friends. Now is the time for stronger partnerships and focused action for the Nigerian child. Together, we can secure a brighter future for the children of today,” the statement concluded.
