LAGOS / BENIN – The much awaited Edo Governorship Election took place peacefully on Saturday despite the extensive apprehension expressed in the run up to the exercise.

The campaigns recorded a significant level of violence and mud-slinging which gave rise to the anxiety that welcomed the poll across the 18 local government areas of the state.

There was large turnout of voters despite the morning downpour.

The downpour delayed arrival of materials and commencement of voting in some polling units, and this necessitated the extension of voting time in the affected PUs.

The candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, and the Labour Party (LP), Olumide Apata were the prominent out of 17 candidates that contested in an off-circle election to get a successor for Godwin Obaseki, who is leaving the office November 12, 2024, after eight years.

2,249,780 (85.57%) voters collected their PVCs out of 2,629,025 total number of registered voters and 4,519 polling units in the state.
