The Public Diplomacy Counsellor Lee McManis of the US Embassy in Nigeria has emphasised the need for the federal government to redirect its economic reforms to boost productivity and improve livelihoods.
Speaking at the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association Annual Seminar in Abuja, McManis noted that Nigeria stands at a critical juncture in its economic journey, with immense potential for growth and development.
He highlighted the importance of economic reforms, citing the agricultural sector as a key area where reforms can make a significant impact. “Agriculture remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy,” McManis said.
“By implementing policies that support modern farming techniques, improve access to markets, and encourage value addition, we can significantly boost productivity and ensure food security for millions of Nigerians.”
McManis also emphasised the role of technology and innovation in driving economic transformation and commended initiatives such as BudgIT, which promotes transparency and accountability in governance.
“Technology and innovation are powerful catalysts for economic transformation,” he said. “By leveraging technology, we can bridge gaps, streamline processes, and create new opportunities.”
The US diplomat reiterated the US government’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic development, citing various initiatives such as the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, Fulbright Academic Fellowships, and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
“The US government is committed to supporting Nigeria’s economic development through various initiatives,” McManis said. “We believe that by working together, we can achieve more sustainable and inclusive growth.”
McManis also highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnership in driving economic reforms.
“The journey towards economic reform and improved livelihoods is not one that can be undertaken by the government alone,” he said.
“It requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the private sector, civil society, and the international community.”
The seminar, which brought together experts and stakeholders from various sectors, provided a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas on how to redirect economic reforms to boost productivity and improve livelihoods in Nigeria.
McManis urged stakeholders to work together to shape the future of economic reforms in Nigeria and to chart a course towards a more productive, equitable, and prosperous nation. “I encourage you to seize this opportunity to chart a course towards a more productive, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
