Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have detained three individuals linked to the death of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an Israeli citizen and representative of the Chabad movement.
Israel has described the killing as an “antisemitic act of terror.”
Rabbi Kogan, who also held Moldovan citizenship, was reported missing last Thursday and was found dead on Sunday.
Chabad, an international Hasidic Jewish organization, reported that Kogan had been abducted in Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the UAE.
Known for his efforts in establishing Jewish communities, Kogan had worked to promote Judaism in the region, including founding the UAE’s first Jewish education centre and advancing kosher food accessibility.
The UAE’s Ministry of Interior confirmed on Monday that legal proceedings had begun against three Uzbek nationals arrested in connection with the murder.
The ministry pledged to “swiftly uncover the details, circumstances, and motives” behind the incident.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the murder as a “heinous, antisemitic act of terror” and assured that Israel would utilize all available means to bring those responsible to justice. Offering condolences to Kogan’s family, Netanyahu emphasised the importance of combating such acts.
Despite the tragedy, an Israeli foreign ministry official underscored that the incident would not hinder Israel’s growing ties with the UAE. Instead, it would be used as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration. The official, who remained unnamed, noted “strong cooperation” between Israeli and Emirati authorities in the investigation, including efforts to identify additional suspects and potential external influences.
Rabbi Kogan’s body was repatriated to Israel on Monday, and the Israeli government reissued travel guidance for nationals, advising caution and recommending secure accommodations during visits to the UAE.
The White House also condemned the killing, with National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett describing it as a “horrific crime against peace, tolerance, and coexistence.”
The U.S. pledged support to both Israel and the UAE in their investigations.
