…as Ugbor champions recycling as key to job creation, environmental protection
ABUJA – Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, has called on Nigerians to embrace the recycling industry as a pathway to wealth creation and job generation.
Akume made this appeal in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of a book titled “Recycling in Nigeria: How to Start and Run a Successful Recycling Business” authored by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Environment.
Speaking at the event, Akume outlined the significant economic potential of the recycling sector, emphasizing that it offers an untapped resource for job creation, especially among Nigeria’s youth.
“Recycling is not just an environmental imperative but a key economic opportunity,” Akume said, urging entrepreneurs and investors to explore this promising industry.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Chris Tarka, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) emphasized that waste recycling presents a significant business opportunity in Nigeria, with the potential to generate substantial income and promote a safer environment.
Speaking at a recent book launch, he praised the author, Hon. Ugbor, for providing a comprehensive guide on how individuals can enter the recycling industry, stating, “The book offers valuable lessons on recycling, and I encourage Nigerians to explore the opportunities it highlights. Hopefully, next time, we’ll be launching a sequel on ‘Riches in Trash.’”
In his address, Hon. Ugbor, who represents the Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency of Benue State, explained that his book aims to promote the ideals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, he noted it aligns with SDG 6, which focuses on sustainable water and sanitation management; SDG 11, which promotes safe, resilient, and sustainable cities; SDG 12, which advocates sustainable consumption and production patterns; and SDG 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change.
Hon. Ugbor shared that the book reflects over 17 years of experience in environmental consultancy, during which he has advised governments, businesses, and industries across Nigeria and beyond on waste recycling. “Drawing on both local and international expertise, I’ve developed insights into the science and logistics of waste collection, transport, storage, processing, recycling, and disposal,” he said.
He added, “This book is my way of giving back the knowledge I’ve gained over the years. It’s crafted to encourage better waste management in Nigeria and to raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste disposal for environmental health and public well-being.”
Commending Ugbor’s efforts, Hon. Julius Pondi, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, highlighted the author’s vision and creativity in developing a resource that can empower individuals to invest in the recycling industry.
He expressed admiration for Ugbor’s commitment to advancing environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawan, represented by Assistant Director E.V.H. Peters, also applauded Ugbor’s initiative, recommending the book to stakeholders in the environmental sector.
“Globally, recycling has become a significant economic activity and a means of promoting environmental safety,” he noted.
The book launch was attended by several dignitaries, including the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arch Sunny Ochonu; the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede (represented by the organization’s spokesperson); members of the National Assembly; the Chairman of APC in Benue, Chief Austin Agada; and numerous others.
