The House of Representatives on Tuesday mandated its joint committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), National Security and Intelligence and Police Affairs to summon the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, Police Commissioner, Peter Opara over rising cases of killings by criminals commonly called ‘One chance’.

Also to be invited is the Director General (DG), Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi.

The resolution was consequent upon the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Dabo Haruna (APC, Bauchi).

Haruna, had in his lead motion told the House that his aide, Ni’ima Suleman was killed by suspected ‘One Chance’ criminals.

He said Ni’ima was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint at Banex Junction, Wuse 2, by ‘One chance’ operators on her way home to Jahi District, around 6:15 pm and consequently murdered on Thursday, 17th October 2024.

The lawmaker expressed dismay that she was killed despite paying ransom in full and her body was found between 9 to 10 pm at Maitama/Minister’s Hill Bridge the same day.

He stated that “This heinous crime has sent shockwaves through our community, confirming the escalating insecurity in the FCT. It is our collective responsibility as lawmakers to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.

“In recent years, the nation’s capital has experienced an upshot in the rate of kidnappings and robbery incidents including One chance,” from those kidnapped from far flung suburbs to those kidnapped along the Airport Road from those picked from their Estates, to those kidnapped at the city centre to those abducted by renegade one-chance tax: operators.

“It has been a tumultuous and scary situation for people living within the capital territory of the use of unregistered and unpainted taxis has further worsen the situation, providing an easy conduit for criminal activities within the capital city.

“The residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are living in fear as the security of the nation’s seat of power has continued to deteriorate as brutal criminals go about with their daily operations without mercy on citizens.”

The motion was unanimously endorsed.
