NVMA Holds Annual Conference On October 22 In Jos

JOS – The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) is set to hold its annual conference on October 22 this year at Crespan Hotel, Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Dr. Moses Arokoyo, President of the NVMA, disclosed this at NUJ Press centre at a Press Conference held at NUJ Centre in Jos

According to him, this year’s conference is in line with the initiatives of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who recently declared a state of emergency regarding food security in the country.

Arokoyo emphasized that veterinarians in Nigeria are strategically repositioning themselves to play significant role towards addressing these challenges.

While highlighting the theme of the conference, which celebrates 100 years of veterinary service delivery in Nigeria, Arokoyo said that discussions would centered around harnessing, artificial intelligence and enhancing national security.

The opening ceremony, he said, would feature various professionals, including veterinarians across different specialties, who are expected to share insights on leveraging technology to improve the sector practices.

The Conference would feature notably, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations is expected to deliver a special address during the event.

The NVMA President said the event plans to support government efforts in service delivery, particularly food security.

Arokoyo also underscored the substantial contributions veterinarians have made to agriculture in Nigeria and expressed their commitment to doing even more.

He also disclosed that current statistics indicates that agricultural sector contributes significantly to the national GDP, yet there are concerns over livestock .

According to him, aquaculture suggest a troubling downturn in these areas.

He added that towards responding to the challenges facing the livestock industry, which is currently in recession, the NVMA welcomed the establishment of a Ministry of Livestock Development.

“We believe veterinarians are crucial in addressing production and health issues and could use their expertise to improve the nation’s economic landscape.

While discussing public health, Arokoyo highlighted the severe impact of zoonotic diseases which account for a significant number of illnesses and deaths globally.

He stressed the importance of veterinarians in preventing outbreaks and preparing for potential future pandemics.

The association President reiterated their role as gatekeepers of public health, noting that without their involvement, the risk of zoonotic diseases escalating remains high.

He. In light of the upcoming conference, the NVMA President the Conference is calling on the federal government to prioritize the hiring of veterinarians at all levels of governance.

He argued that establishing a dedicated ministry for veterinary affairs would enhance their ability to combat animal-related diseases, which have detrimental economic consequences.

The NVMA President then expressed strong desire to elevate the veterinary profession in Nigeria, emphasizing that progress is essential for ensuring public health and animal welfare.

He said the next five days would be crucial to the Association as they prepare to issue a comprehensive communiqué and reaffirm their commitment to preventing zoonotic diseases and enhancing the stewardship of veterinary medicine in Nigeria.
