NLC President Sets To Honour Police Invitation This Week

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has revealed that he will be returning to the police headquarters this week to honour yet another invitation from the force.

New Telegraph recalls that Ajaero had recently been under increased scrutiny by security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Speaking over the weekend to a gathering of workers and union officials in Lagos, Ajaero asserted that efforts to intimidate and suppress organized labour would ultimately prove futile.

He described his recent detainment by state forces as a clear attempt to undermine the labour movement.

“I was recently apprehended and held by the state, which was a blatant effort to intimidate and stifle our movement. They anticipated uncovering misconduct, but we have maintained our resolve. We all must continue to uphold this spirit,” Ajaero stated.

He further announced his intention to respond to a final police summons scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, at the police headquarters in Abuja.

“On August 29, we honoured the summons of the state to answer to some allegations, and on the 25th of this month, we shall honour another one, this time at the police headquarters in Abuja,” Ajaero confirmed.

He emphasized the importance of integrity within the labour movement, urging members to remain unsullied and united in the face of challenges.

“Our hands must remain unsullied, our hearts pure so that when the enemies of our movement come, as they will, they will find nothing to use against us.

As we prepare for the struggles ahead, remember they can imprison our bodies, but they cannot imprison our spirit. They can throw every obstacle on our path, but they cannot destroy our unity,” he declared.

Ajaero also expressed gratitude to international organizations, particularly those in the global trade union community, for their steadfast support during the NLC’s recent difficulties.

“We are especially thankful to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), ITUC-Africa, Public Services International (PSI), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of the UK, IndustriALL Global Union, the German Federation of Trade Unions, LO Norway, and all patriotic Nigerians.

“Your collective voices condemned the actions of the government against the NLC and its leadership, and for this, we remain profoundly grateful,” Ajaero said.

As the NLC prepares for future challenges, Ajaero’s message remains clear: the movement’s resolve and unity will be key to overcoming any obstacles that lie ahead.
