The World Trade Organization (WTO), has reappointed Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as its Director-General for a second tenure at its General Council meeting held on Friday.
The reappointment of Okonjo-Iweala who made history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, was announced on its official X handle shortly after she officially secured a second term, and its 166 member states have unanimously agreed to reappoint her for a second term.
The post read:
“Breaking: the General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. More details to follow.”

According to the body, the decision was made during a closed-door session of the WTO’s General Council, which ensured that the former Nigerian Minister of Finance will continue her leadership beyond her current term which ends in August 2025.
Her reappointment is also coming on time to help facilitate preparations for the WTO’s upcoming ministerial conference in Cameroon scheduled for 2026.
Okonjo-Iweala was first appointed the WTO DG in March 2021, with the tenure terminating in August 2025, while the second term is set to commence on 1 September, 2025.
