The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has commenced an investigation into the prolonged detention of a Nigerian, Abdul Olatunji, in South Africa since 2019 without trial.
In a statement on Tuesday, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, assured the public that the Federal Government is committed to uncovering the truth behind Olatunji’s alleged ordeal.
Olatunji’s family has accused South African authorities of fabricating false charges against him, leading to his extended incarceration. They have called on the Nigerian government to intervene urgently.
NiDCOM confirmed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has contacted the South African government for an explanation regarding the matter.
The statement read, “The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission’s (NiDCOM) attention has been drawn to this case, and we wish to state that immediate steps are being taken to address it.
“Since the matter was brought to NiDCOM’s attention, we have reached out to the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa, who has demanded clarification from the South African government given the severity of the allegations.
“It should be noted that this case was not previously reported to NiDCOM or the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa. However, we are now working with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out and justice is served.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Women’s Association in South Africa has pledged support for Olatunji, revealing plans for a visit to the prison where he is held.
The group’s president, Elizabeth Johnson, said arrangements for visitation were underway following media reports on the case.
NiDCOM also disclosed that its Chairman had spoken directly with Olatunji’s brother, reassuring the family of the government’s commitment to resolving the matter.
“The Nigerian, Abdul Olatunji, has allegedly been detained since 2019 without a fair trial. His family claims he is a victim of false and malicious charges orchestrated by South African officials and has appealed for Federal Government intervention.
“NiDCOM assures that the matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice and fairness,” the statement added.
