The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered illegal packaging centers at Article Market in Abule-Osu, seizing items worth ₦2 billion, a significant breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit alcohol production.
According to a statement released by NAFDAC on Thursday via their official X handle, @NafdacAgency, the operation resulted in the confiscation of over 50,000 fake branded labels and packaging materials. These materials were intended for the production of unauthorised and potentially hazardous alcoholic beverages.
NAFDAC officials emphasised that this raid marks a crucial step in safeguarding public health and safety, reinforcing their commitment to combating the distribution of counterfeit products in the market.
Reporting the breakthrough, NAFDAC wrote on X, “NAFDAC has dismantled illegal alcohol packaging operations at Article Market in Abule-Osun, Lagos State. During the raid, over 50,000 counterfeit branded labels and packaging materials for fake alcoholic beverages, valued at approximately ₦2 billion, were confiscated.”
NAFDAC also disclosed that the items were used in the illegal production of alcoholic drinks that pose severe health risks.
“These items were being used to produce unapproved and hazardous alcoholic products. NAFDAC warns about the severe health risks of counterfeit alcohol, including poisoning and organ damage,” the statement said.
NAFDAC urged consumers to remain vigilant by purchasing alcoholic beverages only from trusted vendors and reporting any suspicious activities.
“Consumers are advised to purchase alcoholic beverages only from trusted vendors and report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
