Mexican Boxing Legend Vazquez Passes Away At 46

December 04, (THEWILL) – Israel Vazquez, a legendary Mexican boxer, who dominated the super bantamweight division, passed away at 46 after a battle with cancer, the World Boxing Council (WBC) confirmed on Tuesday. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that saw him become a three-time world champion and engage in one of boxing’s most memorable rivalries.

Vazquez’s professional journey began in 1995, quickly establishing himself as a formidable fighter known for exceptional hand speed and powerful punching. His most notable period came during an intense four-fight series with fellow Mexican boxer Rafael Marquez, where they traded victories and earned two consecutive Fight of the Year awards in 2007 and 2008.

The boxer’s career took a significant turn after a detached retina diagnosis following his 2008 victory, which forced him to remain out of the ring for over a year. His final professional bout came in 2010, when Marquez delivered a knockout that concluded Vazquez’s competitive boxing career, leaving behind an impressive record of 44 wins, 5 losses, and 32 knockouts.

Prominent figures in the boxing world paid tribute to Vazquez’s legacy. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman commemorated him on social media, stating: “Israel is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife Laura, their children, family and friends during these difficult times.” Renowned trainer Freddie Roach also memorialised Vazquez, describing him on Instagram as: “Forever a world champion and legend in boxing” and “One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with.”

Vazquez recently revealed his battle with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, before his passing. His contribution to boxing extends beyond his remarkable fight record, with his intense rivalry with Marquez becoming a defining chapter in super bantamweight history.
