The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a 25-year-old man, Bukola Olabode, accused of defrauding Point of Sale (PoS) operators and residents of Ihunbo in the Ipokia Local Government Area by impersonating a police officer. According to reports, the suspect was captured by residents on Tuesday and was initially handed over to officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ihunbo, who later transferred him to the police at the Idiroko Division.

The police revealed that Olabode used a common trick to carry out his fraudulent activities posing as a police officer by wearing a camouflage shirt and jeans. Olabode’s luck ran out when he attempted a scam at the PoS stand of an operator named Mary Midoyin. After trying to trick her, Midoyin realised the scam and confronted him. The suspect fled the scene, but determined residents quickly gave chase, eventually catching him.

him. Speaking on the arrest, Police spokesperson Odutola explained, “The suspect was dressed in a police camouflage shirt, cap, and jeans when he carried out the crime. After his deception was exposed, he attempted to make a fake transfer of ₦60,000 to PoS operator Mary Midoyin before fleeing. However, residents pursued and caught him, handing him over to the NSCDC in Ihunbo. He was later transferred to the Idiroko Police Division.”

Upon his arrest, the police recovered a Samsung phone, a black Itel phone used in the fraudulent activities, and a police constabulary warrant card from Olabode. A round-neck T-shirt was also found in his possession. The suspect has since confessed to several similar frauds in the community and is now in police custody. This incident follows a similar case from 2022, in which one Akinyemi Thomas, 38, was arrested for impersonating a police officer while wearing a full police camouflage uniform under a bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway.
