The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has urged the management of the FCT College of Education, Zuba, to adopt an all-encompassing curriculum that is globally competitive yet locally relevant.
Speaking at the institution’s 3rd combined convocation ceremony, Dr. Mahmoud emphasized the need for continuous curriculum adaptation to produce graduates who are both marketable and globally competitive.
The minister congratulated the 6,068 graduating students on successfully completing their programs, encouraging them to leverage their knowledge and skills to contribute to national development. Highlighting the FCT Administration’s commitment to improving education infrastructure, Dr. Mahmoud revealed that over ₦13 billion has been invested in school renovation projects.
“The current FCT Administration will not relent in its commitment to following due process, preserving the rule of law, securing lives and property, and rehabilitating critical infrastructure,” she stated.
Dr. Mahmoud encouraged the College to embrace modern ICT technologies in teaching and emphasized its role as a hub for research and community service. She called on the institution to lead demand-driven research to improve societal well-being.
“This College should take the lead in championing demand-driven research that serves society, making human lives better and enriched,” she added.
Acknowledging the College’s infrastructural needs, the minister reassured the administration’s support for initiatives aimed at excellence. She commended the harmonious relationship between staff and students, noting that such stability is key to achieving global competitiveness in higher education.
The Provost of the College, Dr. Sule Mundi, disclosed that the graduates included 4,625 regular and 1,443 part-time students awarded the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). He appealed for increased funding to introduce technical programs like automobile technology, building, and electrical and electronics.
“The importance of such courses cannot be overemphasized, as they provide opportunities for self-reliance and address gaps in technical education,” Dr. Mundi remarked.
Dr. Danlami Hayyo, the FCT Education Mandate Secretary, reaffirmed the Administrator’s dedication to enhancing the institution’s standing globally. The event also featured the conferment of fellowship awards and certificates of excellence to outstanding graduates.
The ceremony underscored the College’s role in shaping the future of education in the FCT and beyond, with a shared commitment to fostering innovation, research, and excellence in teaching.
