To foster patriotism and a shared sense of purpose among Nigerians, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Lagos State has raised awareness about the new National Anthem, the National Value Charter, and National Identity Symbols.
Dr. Mustafa Adedeji Tukur, Lagos State Director NOA while speaking at the sensitisation programme held at the Ikeja local government said that the meeting is part of the ongoing nationwide campaign for a fundamental approach to value orientation and attitudinal change.
The programme had in attendance religious leaders, market leaders, women groups, youths, Community Development Associations, leaders of ethnic groups, among others.
He advised Nigerians to join hands and work together to promote the national values and positive value system in the country, stressing that the campaign is focused on renewing citizens’ commitment to national unity and the values that bind the country together.
Tukur said that the programme is part of what NOA is doing is to encourage civic engagement and civic harmony between the government and the people.
He said that the mandate of the Agency include communicating government policies, programme and activities, mobilizing support for them and processing feedback to government on the policies
“It is also to promote democracy as the best model of government and promote values that will ensure peace, orderliness and moral conduct.
He advised Nigerians to have hope in the country that the government itself is committed to the new creed that is in the national value charter which is like a social contract between the citizens and the government.
Awosanya Stephen, a publisher and a mobiliser, one of the facilitators said that the essence of the programme is the need to promote national values and national symbol which is borne out of the fact that the positive value system in the country has been eroded, the value of honesty, integrity, sincerity which is having a serious negative effect on the society.
He said there is the need for all to look at it, in view of correcting them.
“We want people to be aware that there is a need for us to change the system. Our attitude to issues needs to be changed, and everyone has a role to play,” he said.
Dr. Mojeed Alabi Balogun, the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government while speaking said that the gathering was organized to discuss and reflect on the importance of the nation’s National Anthem and National Value Charter.
Balogun who was represented by Yomi Mayugbe, his Vice said that these symbols of our nationhood are crucial to our identity and unity as a people.
“Our National Anthem is a beacon of hope, a call to duty, and a reminder of our collective aspirations. It is a symbol of our nation’s resilience, strength, and the sacrifices of our heroes past.”
The National Value Charter, on the other hand, according to him embodies the core values that we hold dear as a nation.
“It serves as a guide for our actions, decisions, and interactions as individuals, organizations, and governments.
“Let us work together to build a nation where justice, equity, and prosperity reign supreme. A nation where every citizen is proud to stand and sing our National Anthem with hope in their hearts and a sense of belonging,” he said.
