The Abia State Government has announced its readiness to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage for its workers, with payments set to begin in October 2024.
This development was revealed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday.
Kanu emphasized that the decision reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of its workforce.
“The state government is committed to the new minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the N70,000 wage will commence,” Kanu stated.

He further explained that while the N70,000 wage aligns with the national minimum wage, Abia State is prepared to adjust it as necessary.
“If the governor decides to exceed the national standard and pay more, that will be at his discretion,” Kanu added, indicating the government’s flexibility in addressing workers’ needs.
Also speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed that the state is fully prepared to commence the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for civil servants.
This move follows similar steps taken by other states to improve workers’ salaries.
Tribune Online reports that on October 15, 2024, Gombe State Government also approved a new minimum wage N71,451 for its civil servants and local government employees.
