Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has announced plans to establish Nigeria’s first Sub-National Research Institute at Abdulkadir Kure University (AKU), Minna.
This was disclosed during the maiden matriculation ceremony of AKU for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Governor shared that the Research Institute will focus on agriculture, science, and innovation. He also revealed that the state has secured N15 billion for constructing hostels and the Senate building and an additional N500 million to support the launch of six new faculties.
Governor Bago congratulated the 86 pioneer students and announced a N1 million scholarship for each student. He emphasized the importance of discipline, stating that 50 scholarship slots will be awarded to students of high character and academic excellence, particularly those studying medicine and related fields.
Additionally, he highlighted plans to attract academic talent through scholarships and exchange programs for lecturers and students.

The Vice Chancellor of AKU, Professor Muhammad Aliyu Paiko, lauded the event as a milestone and praised Governor Bago’s dedication to educational development, calling him a beacon of hope for Niger State.
He mentioned that the National Universities Commission (NUC) will visit AKU on November 15, 2024, for the verification of six additional faculties.
Pro-Chancellor of AKU, Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, also commended Governor Bago’s vision for the university, expressing pride in its establishment. He noted that the university’s council is committed to implementing measures to make AKU a world-class institution.
