Ganduje Urges Constitutional Roles For Deputy Governors

Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for a revision of Nigeria’s Constitution to assign specific duties to deputy governors.

Ganduje, who is the former governor of Kano State, made this appeal during his keynote address at the Third National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria (FFDGN) held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The two-day conference, themed “Strategic Solutions for Good Governance, Food Security, and Sustainable Growth in Nigeria,” focuses on addressing critical national challenges.

In his address, Ganduje described the role of a deputy governor as often controversial, emphasizing the need for governors and their deputies to share responsibilities in governance.

He stated, “No leader can handle everything alone. There is always a need to delegate. However, there has been ongoing debate about whether deputy governors should have defined functions in the Constitution. Currently, unlike vice presidents, there are no specific roles outlined for deputy governors.”

Ganduje suggested that a review of the Constitution could include provisions that clarify the responsibilities of deputy governors, allowing for better role distribution.

He encouraged members of the forum to continue fostering unity and cooperation among themselves as they work towards addressing governance issues.
