October 24, (THEWILL) – The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN) and IDH, have announced the tree planting initiative in Sokoto State towards promoting sustainability and economic growth in the state.
The project, which was flagged off at Sultan Muhammadu Abubakar III, aims to plant no fewer than 20,000 fruit trees across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Aliyu Samaila, Head, Value Chain Development at FMAN wheat development programme, said Sokoto is one of the 14 states where the tree planting campaign is being carried out in Nigeria.
Samaila maintained that their plan was to plant 20,000 fruit trees in Nigeria and Sokoto would have 2,000 thousand trees planted in today’s exercise.
He stressed that trees are not only for beatification and production of oxygen for mankind but they are also for commercial purposes. Hence the need for fruit trees in every human environment.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Nura Shehu Tangaza who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Almustapha Alkali said that trees are the only assertion if plants could last long and save unborn generations from climate disasters.
The commissioner emphasised that for the environment to be habitable, trees are needed and without trees in the environment of man, it will remain uninhabitable.
He appreciated the effort of IDH and FMAN for their timely intervention in combatting climate change in Nigeria.
The Commissioner urged all Airline Operators at the Airport to contribute positively to the maintenance of the Airport facility and ensure the safety of workers and passengers within the premises.
Earlier, the Manager, Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Alhaji Ahmadu Danjuma represented by Zuberu Ndanusa thanked the organisations for their interest in planting fruit trees in the Airport.
He also appreciated the effort of the Governor over his developmental strides so far recorded within his one year as a Governor of Sokoto state.
The manager noted that before the intervention, the State Government had planted 50 trees in the Airport.
