Flood: Relocate to IDP camps, Delta govt advises victims

The Delta State government has advised residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher grounds as it makes adequate arrangements to accommodate them at the nearest Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The camps are located in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro, and Otu-Jeremi.

The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Sir Festus Ahon, provided this advice during a television programme monitored in Asaba. He assured the public that the state would not abandon flood victims, especially as rising water levels threaten those in coastal communities.

According to Ahon, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains committed to ensuring that all residents are protected and catered for in line with his administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.

Ahon stated, “As soon as we received warnings about the impending flood, our governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori set up a high-powered flood management committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu. The committee went straight to work, alerting residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds.

“In the interim, we are establishing camps in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro, and Otu-Jeremi for people to relocate to. The flood management committee, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has been visiting coastal communities to inform residents about the impending flood and encourage them to move to the nearest camps.

“As a committee, we have made arrangements for mattresses, food, electricity, water, and medical care for the IDPs, and we urge them to relocate to the camps. Additionally, we have also organised for schoolchildren to continue their education in the camps.”
