A major initiative to rid beggars off the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has commenced on Monday, resulting in the arrest of 15 beggars and 19 scavengers in Abuja.
The operation, involving the police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and various paramilitary agencies, was divided into four teams, tasked with targeting areas in the city known for housing beggars and other disturbances, particularly under bridges and tunnels.
FCT Police Commissioner, CP Olatunji Disu described the initiative as “a national assignment,” emphasising the need for professionalism among the enforcement teams while strictly upholding the Minister’s directives.
“The operation will run for the first two weeks. After that, we will assess our achievements and determine if further action is necessary,” he said.
On the first day of the operation, the Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwari, explained that efforts would be carried out both day and night to meet the set goals.
Gwari who was represented by Dr Peter Olumuji, outlined the four designated areas for the operation as the City Center (metro), the Airport Road from City Gates to Bill Clinton Road, the Kubwa axis (encompassing Kubwa and Gwarimpa), and the Asokoro area including AYA, Nyanya, Karu, and Jikwoyi, all targeting issues simultaneously.
Although no beggars were apprehended in the City Centre due to their evasiveness, the operation resulted in the successful capture of 15 beggars and 19 scavengers throughout the various sectors.
“Many of them responded to the Minister’s announcement. Nevertheless, we have still apprehended a few who attempted to remain visible,” he said.
Also, Head of Enforcement at the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEBP), Kaka Bello, stated that the initiative extends beyond targeting beggars, noting that goal is also to restore order and cleanliness throughout the city.
He confirmed that roadside traders and any illegal business operators would also be addressed during these operations.
Director of Social Welfare at FCTA, Dr. Sani Rabe, explained the next steps for those arrested, stating they would be taken to the government’s rehabilitation center in Kuchikon, Bwari Area Council for proper profiling.
“While those willing to learn will receive training for skill development, individuals uninterested in acquiring skills will be repatriated to their home states,” he said.
