…As Ogun Prepares For Gateway Games 2024
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially announced Enugu State as the host of the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival.
This was revealed after a top-level meeting of the Commission’s management.
Enugu, popularly known as the Coal City State, emerged victorious in a keenly contested bidding process and is set to deliver what promises to be a world-class sporting spectacle.
This will be the first time the state will host the festival since the inception of the games in 1973.
The biennial National Sports Festival is a platform that unites athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in a celebration of sportsmanship, excellence, and national unity.
Speaking on the announcement, Kola Daniel, Media Adviser to the Director General of the NSC.
“Enugu’s selection reflects our commitment to expanding the reach of the festival across Nigeria. The Coal City has shown the capacity and readiness to host an event of this magnitude. We are confident they will deliver a tournament that will raise the bar for future editions.”
Before Enugu takes center stage, Ogun State is gearing up to host the 22nd edition of the festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, in January next year.
The Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in Ogun’s readiness to host over 15,000 athletes and officials. He said:
“Ogun State has been working tirelessly to ensure the Gateway Games will be a resounding success. With the level of preparation we have seen, it will not only be a celebration of sports but also a showcase of the state’s culture and hospitality.”
The Gateway Games 2024 marks a historic moment as this is the first time the host of a subsequent festival has been announced before the current edition concludes. This development gives Enugu State ample time for comprehensive planning and preparation.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, in response to the announcement, expressed excitement about the opportunity to host the games. He assured the NSC and Nigerians of the state’s commitment to excellence.
“We are honored to host the 23rd National Sports Festival. This is a momentous occasion for Enugu State, and we are determined to deliver a festival that will remain memorable for all. Our preparations will begin immediately, and we are focused on leaving a lasting legacy,” Governor Mbah stated.
The last edition of the festival was held in Asaba, Delta State, where over 11,000 athletes competed in various sports.
The games have continually served as a breeding ground for unearthing talent that represents Nigeria on the global stage.
As the countdown to the Gateway Games begins, the focus shifts to Ogun State, which is already abuzz with anticipation.
Enugu State, on the other hand, has ample time to prepare to ensure the 23rd edition of the festival will be a landmark event in the history of Nigerian sports.
