Emefiele: EFCC Seeks Virtual Testimony Of US-Based Witnesses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is seeking the permission of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, Abuja, to allow two US-based witnesses, I.E. Obiora and Aisha Ahmed, to testify virtually in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

New Telegraph recalls that Emefiele is  facing a four-count charge relating to disobedience of legal directives and actions detrimental to public interest, particularly concerning the controversial naira redesign policy.

During the trial on Thursday, EFCC counsel Abass Mohammed informed Justice Maryanne Anenih that logistical difficulties had hindered the witnesses’ travel to Nigeria.

As a result, the prosecution sought the court’s approval to take the witnesses’ oral testimonies via Zoom or other video platforms.

The defence, represented by A. Labi-Lawal, raised no objections but inquired whether these would be the final witnesses for the prosecution.

Mohammed confirmed that additional witnesses would be called as the case plan progresses.

Justice Anenih granted the request and adjourned the trial to November 14, 26, December 4, 2024, and January 21, 2025, for further proceedings.
