Education For All: Philanthropists Revitalise Central School In Enugu

ENUGU – Gidim Ejike Okonkwo and Chika Okonkwo’s remarkable philanthropy has transformed Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Central School in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The Central School located at Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in was officially commissioned by Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, the State Commissioner for Education in Enugu State.

This momentous occasion inspires a sense of unity and cooperation among community leaders and residents alike as well as marked the culmination of a remarkable transformation, as the school, built over 90 years ago, had been reconstructed, rehabilitated, and furnished through the generosity of Gidim Ejike Okonkwo and his wife, Mrs. Chika Okonkwo.

Speaking with newsmen after the unveiling of the newly refurbished school, the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Enugu State Ministry of Education, Chief Patrick Ochi, commended the family of Gidim Ejike Okonkwo for their remarkable benevolence toward their community.

“This initiative is a shining example of what partnership between the government and private individuals can achieve. It aligns with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration, which stresses collaborative efforts in driving educational development,” Chief Ochi remarked. He further noted how the governor’s education policy covers all levels, ensuring comprehensive growth across the sector.

Chief Ochi added, “The Okonkwo family has set a benchmark for others to follow, and we hope to see more contributions like this from both individuals and groups across Enugu State. Education is a shared responsibility.”

Also speaking, the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, praised Gidim Ejike Okonkwo and his family for remembering their roots and contributing to the development of their community. “This is how you create a lasting legacy—by building for future generations. I urge other well-meaning individuals to replicate the Okonkwo family’s noble act of philanthropy,” he said.

In her remarks, Mrs. Chika Okonkwo, who hails from Ibite Village but is married to Ugwuoma, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to God for the opportunity to join her husband in executing such an impactful project for her community. “It has always been my desire to give back to society, and doing so at such a crucial time in our land’s history gives my family a deep sense of fulfillment,” she noted with emotion.

She further expressed the importance of community and joint efforts in development, saying, “This project would not have been possible without the support and unity of our people. I also want to acknowledge the leadership of our community, particularly the Igwe-elect, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, for his steady commitment to progress.”

Mrs. Okonkwo also praised Chief Ogbonna Jnr, saying, “His leadership has been a source of hope for us all. His continuous support and insightful approach to community development are the very essence of the unity we need to push our community forward.” She expressed hope that more initiatives like this would be inspired by the community’s newfound sense of purpose.

In his remarks, the Igwe-elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, applauded the Okonkwo family’s developmental foresight. “For the first time in decades, we are commissioning two individually built projects within the span of one week. This is a clear sign of the power of unity and collaboration among our community leaders,” he stated.

Chief Ogbonna Jnr continued, “What we are witnessing today is not just the commissioning of a school but the beginning of a new era for our community. This achievement calls for further cooperation among our people as we work together to build more sustainable projects in the future.”

He also noted that Ogugu Ntu-egbenese’s future depends on the continued solidarity of its people, stating, “We have set the pace with this event, and with ongoing cooperation, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.”

Mrs. Chika Okonkwo, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) based in Baltimore, Maryland, has made significant contributions to the healthcare sector. Specializing in mental health care, she manages conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more. Her practice, located at MedStar Health in Baltimore, also supports patients through psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychotherapy.

However, the Okonkwo and Nweke families’ contributions to their community are not just a symbol of their generosity but also a call to action for all well-to-do members of society to uplift their hometowns, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for generations to come.
