The Edo State Government has lifted the suspension on its state security outfit, previously known as the Edo State Security Network, renaming it the Edo State Security Corps.

The suspension, initially imposed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ahead of the September 2024 governorship election, has been officially revoked. This decision was announced in a statement on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua.

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration described the reinstatement as a critical step toward bolstering the state’s security framework.

“The decision made by the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, marks a comprehensive shift in the state’s quest for enhanced safety and security,” the statement read.

The suspension was originally enforced to comply with constitutional provisions that assign election security solely to the Nigeria Police Force, supported by other agencies within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES)..

“With the successful conduct of the gubernatorial election, the Edo State Government has deemed it necessary to reinstate the security outfit. This move aims to bolster the state’s security apparatus and ensure the safety of its citizens,” the statement added.

To ensure a smooth reactivation, all officers of the reinstated Security Corps have been directed to report to their respective zonal offices—North, Central, or South—or the office of the State Commander.

“This directive aims to ensure a seamless transition and the effective deployment of the Security Corps,” Itua explained.

Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikilor, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Edo State residents.

“The reinstatement of the Edo State Security Corps underscores our administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” Ikilor stated.
