EDO DECIDES: INEC extends voting hours in some polling units

3 hours ago 8

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of voting hours in certain areas of Edo State where the governorship election process began late on Saturday.

In a statement issued from the INEC National Headquarters in Abuja, the electoral body said it is closely monitoring the ongoing election from its situation room. While many polling units across the state reported early commencement of voting, there were also instances of delayed starts in some locations.

“To ensure that no voter is disenfranchised, the Commission wishes to reiterate that, in line with our Regulations and Guidelines, voting will be extended wherever it commenced late,” said Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Member of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

The extension will allow all voters who arrived at their polling units by 2:30 PM to cast their ballots, regardless of how long it takes. INEC has instructed its Edo State office to provide adequate power supply from backup generators where necessary, ensuring that affected polling units or ward collation centers can continue operations without interruption.

This decision comes as part of INEC’s efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and guarantee that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the Edo State governorship election.

The Commission continues to urge voters and election officials to adhere to all guidelines and protocols throughout the extended voting period.
