Edo Appoints 100 Justices Of Peace

BENIN – Comrade Omorodion Oregbe, the Edo State Coordinator of the Motorcycle and Tricycle Union under the aegis of ANNEWATT, was one of the 100 deserving personalities appointed as Justice of the Peace, JP, by the Edo State Government.

After passing through rigorous scrutiny and proved worthy in character, Comrade Omorodion Oregbe joined the 99 other credible Edo citizens to subscribe to the oath of office as justice of peace, JP, which was administered by the chief judge of the state, Honourable Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa.

Swearing-in the 100 admirable personalities at the Edo state high court, the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa advised the justices of the Peace to look beyond the glitz and glamour associated with the prefix, JP, and the aesthetic effect it has on their curriculum vitae as it carries with it enormous duties and responsibilities which must be executed with all sense of responsibility.

Okungbowa also told the new JPs that their duties and responsibilities as a Justice of the Peace are well spelt out under the law of the federal Republic of Nigeria.

He emphasized that under the enabling law they do not possess adjudicatory powers as adjudicatory powers are vested in the court of law adding that their duties are basically to ensure peace and order in the society within the purview of the enabling laws and their instrument of appointment.

While congratulating them, he also warned that they should not abuse their powers so as to forestall the risk of revocation of appointment and withdrawal of certificate by government arising from any adverse report made or established against them.

Addressing journalists immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, the Comrade Dr. Oregbe, JP, who promised to adhere to the tenets of justice of peace emphasized the need for peace to create room for an all round development in the society.

While noting that nothing meaningful can be achieved in an atmosphere of chaos and disorderliness, Oregbe said, “the society is getting worse by the day because of the level of lawlessness in it as little or no attention has been paid to moral values and what the law of the land says”.

For instance, according to him, if you co-build a house and you are given a room to live in and along the line you need an additional one room and your request is not granted, would you rather destroy the house because you were turned down?

“Desperation leads people to early death. Earthly materials are temporary. People’s love for earthly materials and desperation has led them to engage themselves in all forms of vices. We should take a cue from others that are ahead of us”.

While appreciating the state government for finding him worthy of the award, he promised to repose the confidence in him by carrying out his duties within the confines of the law.
