For years, a California man has been paying his neighbour’s power bill by mistake.
Ken Wilson, a California resident, discovered he had mistakenly paid his neighbour’s power bill for up to 18 years.
Wilson, who has lived in the same flat since 2006, said he recently noticed that his Pacific Gas and Electric bill was increasing, so he took steps to reduce his energy consumption.
When his bill did not go down, he contacted PG&E.
“I thought there was a leak, someone was stealing my electricity or the meter was broken because something was not right,” he explained.
A utility company employee arrived to inspect Wilson’s meter and discovered that the company had been charging him for the unit next door rather than his flat.
Wilson claimed that the mix-up may have occurred for the entire 18 years he has lived in the flat.
“We acknowledge that an error occurred in this case, and we are fully committed to correcting the situation with the customer and making the customer whole,” PG&E said in a statement.
