Education is one of the most crucial investments any nation can make for its future. In Nigeria, where a significant portion of the population is young, there is a pressing need for improved quality in education. Allocating a lion’s share of the budget to this sector will have long-lasting benefits.
The Nigerian government allocated about N1.29 trillion for the education sector in the 2024 budget. This represents about 6.6 percent of the total federal budget, is lower than the UNESCO recommendation of at least 15 percent.
Meanwhile, the amount in the budget allocated to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, alone was approximately N34.5 billion. Such money can be reduced and added to the education sector so as to fix the loopholes in the sector.
Teachers strikes, students dropping out of school and an unconducive environment in the nation’s public schools and universities can be sorted out if the budget for education increases. The more the people in the country are educated the better the improvements in the country will be.
